LG shows off impressive 5.3-inch LCD w/ ‘world’s narrowest” 0.7mm bezel, hits mass production next month
You won’t find this display on a smartphone you can buy just yet, but LG Display is today showing off a new 5.3-inch LCD smartphone panel that includes an almost non-existent 0.7mm bezel. That’s even thinner than some of the other super thin bezels to hit recent devices like the Sharp Aquos line and, according to LG, the world’s thinnest.
LG explained how it’s been able to achieve the extremely thin bezel, which it points out is thinner than the 0.8mm thickness of a credit card:
To realize the 0.7mm bezel width on the left and right sides of the panel, which is narrower than the 0.8mm thickness of a credit card, LG Display used its “Neo Edge” module processing technology and the world’s first “Advanced In-Cell Touch (AIT)” technology… LG Display’s Neo Edge technology uses an adhesive instead of double-sided tape to attach and completely seal the total area and edges of the panel’s circuit board and backlight unit. Because there is no plastic guide panel to attach the panel and backlight, the Neo Edge technology helps achieve minimal bezel width, while blocking light leakage and being waterproof and dustproof.
LG also notes that the adhesive process allows for “dramatically improving the panel’s durability despite the narrow bezel because of increased elasticity as the adhesive hardens.”
How exactly users will hold the device comfortably without accidental inputs is another question, but LG says “customer demand for displays with a narrow bezel is increasing, because it enables users to enjoy the maximum use of screen area without compromising excellent grip and design.”
LG Display is planning to start mess production of the 5.3-inch full HD LCD panel in November to start deliveries to customers in China and globally.
